WORRALL MALE VOICE CHOIR.
(Registered Charity No. 515038)
NEWSLETTER MARCH 2010.
Where does the time go? We are into March already and it only seems like “5 minutes” since we were rehearsing Christmas music and holding our Christmas Concert at Sacred Heart. This was a memorable concert when, on a bitterly cold Friday night, just over one hundred hardy souls braved the elements to be entertained, not only by the Choir but by seven very talented ladies called “Capella”. They hail from around the Stockport area and are part of a ladies barbershop chorus called the “Heartbeat Chorus”. Their music was certainly different, including audience participation, and was very professionally delivered.
2010 is now upon us and what a year it promises to be. We will see the culmination of our joint project with Bolsterstone Male Voice called “Come and Sing” which was to find singers to start a new training choir who would eventually join either Bolsterstone or Worrall MVC. They will “cut their teeth” with their first ever public performance at The Venue on Saturday, 13th March when they will appear with Bolsterstone MVC, Worrall MVC and Dearne Sax Quartet. Tickets are £5 each and available from The Venue box office. Saturday 17th April sees what we hope will be a wonderful concert in the International Hall at Ponds Forge Leisure Centre, Sheffield. The concert will once again showcase the new Come and Sing Male Voice Choir along with Bolsterstone MVC, Sheffield Youth Orchestra and ourselves. We have also managed to secure the services of Christa Ackroyd from BBC Look North as our compere. At the end of this concert the Come and Sing Choir will be disbanded and hopefully they will want to continue their choral singing experience with either Bolsterstone or Worrall MVCs.
Tickets (£10 each) are now available for the Ponds Forge Concert from the following:-
Terry on 0114 233 5086; Hugh on 0114 232 0294; Mike on 0114 288 4260 and Raymond on 0114 288 4260 or any Choir member. Before all this however, we have a concert of our own at St. Polycarps Church, Malin Bridge on Saturday 6th March when we will be joined by Sheffield’s own ladies barbershop chorus – Sheffield Harmony Chorus. These ladies have recently won a very prestigious barbershop competition in Hazel Grove, Stockport so will be well worth hearing. If you have an evening spare and fancy a night out why not come along. Tickets are £5 each and are available from myself, Hugh Prewett on 0114 2320294 or any choir member. After the dust has settled from the Ponds Forge Concert we have a short interlude to learn new music for our own 40th Anniversary Concert at the Sheffield Anglican Cathedral on Saturday 11th September. This also promises to be a feast of Male Voice Choir singing when we will be joined by New Mill Male Voice Choir from Huddersfield and our old friends from Surrey, Weybridge Male Voice Choir. We also welcome back to Sheffield, soprano Kathryn MacAdam. Many of you may well remember Kathryn from a concert we held at Sacred Heart in June 2008. Kathryn moved to London to study music and further her career and is currently singing with the Glyndebourne Opera. The finale with all three choirs and Kathryn promises to be spectacular. Tickets will be on sale shortly so don’t miss it. Our Chairman, Lewis Atkinson is putting together a small book of the Choirs’ forty years of history which we hope to have completed and on sale for the anniversary year. If anyone has any anecdotes or stories, funny or otherwise, of things which have happened in the past 40 years whilst you have been with the Choir, then please let Lewis or I have them. There is still time to include them in the book. Despite the success of the Come and Sing project, recruitment is still a problem locally. There must be some budding singers out there who maybe looking for a new hobby. So gentlemen, if you enjoy singing, even if it’s only in the bath, but you can sing in tune and are looking for something to do on an evening, why not come along to Worrall Independent Chapel on Towngate Road, Worrall on any Monday or Friday night at 7-30 p.m. and join us. You don’t even have to sing at first if you don’t want too. Just come along and listen to a rehearsal to see if choral singing is for you. You will receive a warm welcome from a very sociable group. If you do decide that it is something you would like to do, you don’t have to be able to read music as we have two excellent teachers in our Musical Director, Dr. Nigel Russell and our Accompanist, Steve Vickers. New choristers do not need to be experienced when they join – it is potential that counts, not achievement. Foremost, we are looking for a “good ear” for music and a strong desire to sing. We are geared up to helping people 'discover their voice'. Our Musical Director Nigel is very experienced at leading singers who have never sung before or who cannot read music. We appreciate it can be a scary proposition on that very first occasion to “put your foot over the doorstep”. Please don’t let that put you off. Give me a call on 0114 2344 374 and I personally will bring you along or arrange a lift with a more conveniently located member so that it is not such a daunting experience. A singing tour of Cornwall is also being planned for 2011. If you are interested in joining us for a week’s holiday please let me know and I will send you details as and when they are available. 2012 will be the 50th Anniversary of the Welsh Association of Male Choirs and on March 24th 2012 they a re planning a Celebration Concert again at the Royal Albert Hall. WMVC have applied to be part of this memorable event. As always there is an up to date Diary Sheet at the back of the Newsletter. We will be delighted to see you at any of the concerts or events listed. We are always looking to cut costs and help the environment. If you are on E Mail and would like to help us cut down on the amount of paper we use you could receive the Newsletter electronically. Drop me an E Mail to Secretary@worrallmvc.org.uk and let me know if you would like to receive the Newsletter this way in future. Ian Pasley – Secretary Worrall Male Voice Choir – March 2010.
