Christmas Season 2011

As usual, the Choir has a number of engagements in December from after-dinner entertainment to our own Christmas Concert. Details of these can be found below

1st December 2011

The choir took part in the first Christmas Concert at Forge Valley Community School commencing at 7:00pm.  Also performing at the concert were Loxley Silver Band, The Forge Valley Singers, Forge Valley 6th Form & Folk Singers John Fowler and Nick Farrelly.  We sang 4 pieces from our Christmas Repertoire, including "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "Stuff The Turkey",  accompanied John Fowler in the chorus of a local carol,  and helped in the singing of 6 Community Carols at the end of each half of the concert.  We were led by our MD, Dr Nigel Russell with Steve Vickers accompanying us on the piano.

12th December 2011

On Monday 12th December the Choir entertained the residents of Loxley Park Care Home to some seasonal Christmas music and Christmas Carols. We had a number of new Christmas male voice choir pieces this year and opened the programme with a traditional Israeli folk song entitled “The Christmas Bells” and an American carol based on a medley of tunes to “Away in a Manger”. We concluded the first half of the programme with some community carol singing. We opened the second half with another relatively new piece (although it was sung many years ago) called “Do you Hear What I Hear”. The concert was closed with more community carol singing with a final rousing carol “We Singers Make Bold” (Merry Christmas) and the traditional end to any Worrall MVC Carol Concert – “Stuff the Turkey”.

16th December 2011

The Choir's Annual Christmas Concert entitled "A Celebration of Christmas" was held at Sacred Heart Church, Hillsborough commencing at 7:30.  Our guests were Loxley Silver Band.  The night was compered by our President, Gerry Kersey,  and we we led on the night by our MD, Dr Nigel Russell and guest accompanist, Julie Rushforth, Subject Leader for Music at Forge Valley School.  Before the concert,  we had a minutes silence in memory of one of our long-standing members who had recently passed away,  and dedicated our performance to his memory.  We commenced the concert with 5 pieces from our Christmas repertoire including "The Christmas Bells", and "A medley on 'Away in a Manger'".  The Band then played 4 pieces - including "english Folk Suite", and "Shepherd's song".  The first half concluded with 6 Community Carols from the Blue Book "The Joy of Christmas" accompanied by the Band.

The second half followed a similar pattern.  We sang a further 3 pieces from our Christmas repertoire - including "Do you hear what I hear?" and "Sing we Nowell".  The Band then played a further 4 pieces - including "Christmas Swingalong" and "Festive Frenzy"  We then sang a further 7 carols from the Blue Book, before the concert concluded with the presentations and the traditional Christmas Finale with the choir singing "Stuff the Turkey"

On Monday 19th December the Choir were the after dinner entertainment at Dore Masonic Lodge with an excellent evening of singing seasonal Christmas music and Christmas Carols. We opened the programme with a traditional Israeli folk song entitled “The Christmas Bells” and an American carol based on a medley of tunes to “Away in a Manger”. We concluded the first half of the programme with some community carol singing. We opened the second half with “Let There Be Peace of Earth” followed by “Do you Hear What I Hear”. The concert was closed with more community carol singing and concluded with  “We Singers Make Bold” (Merry Christmas) and the traditional end to any Worrall MVC Carol Concert – “Stuff the Turkey”. This received a standing ovation and an encore. The guests really entered into the spirit of Christmas and enjoyed a good carol sing. As one gentleman said at the end “I have had a wonderful evening and for me Christmas has now started”.
